Overview
The Fraser Tombs are a group of rock-cut tombs of the Old Kingdom at Tehna el-Gebel, a village in Minya Governorate in Middle Egypt, south of Minya city. They were carved into the limestone cliffs at the desert edge to serve as eternal resting places for provincial officials of the late third millennium BC. The site takes its modern name from George Willoughby Fraser, a British engineer who documented the tombs in the 1890s.
Unlike the royal pyramids of Giza and Saqqara, these tombs belong to the provincial elite who administered Egypt's regions on behalf of the king. Cut directly into the rock, they typically combine a chapel for offerings with a burial chamber below. They offer a valuable view of how officials outside the capital planned for the afterlife, and how funerary traditions spread across the country.
Tehna el-Gebel lies in an area with a long history. The ancient town of Akoris, with later remains from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, stands nearby. Visiting the Fraser Tombs fits well into a wider Minya itinerary, which can include other Middle Egyptian sites such as Beni Hasan, Tell el-Amarna and Tuna el-Gebel, each showing a different chapter of Egypt's past.
